Diver Interaction
Often shy, and can be quite indifferent. However, on rare occasions, they are quite bold; and have been known to charge divers and it has not been unknown for spearfishers to loose their prize catch!!
Habitat & Lifestyle
They are reclusive, and tend to hide in caves, wrecks and under ledges. Juveniles often inhabit mangroves.
Distribution
Uncommon Florida, Bahamas, Caribbean; also Gulf of Mexico, Bermuda and south to Brazil (Once common in Florida, but numbers greatly reduced by over-harvesting).
Unique Physique
Largest fish observed on the reefs. They have small dark spots which appear over the body and fin.
