Diver Interaction
Shy to the extent of non-responsive, wonderful to photograph. Common but divers must be vigilant to find them. This species used to be abundant, but it has become rather uncommon because of over-collecting by snorkelers and scuba divers, who make the mistake of thinking that the color is the shell of the animal, which is instead living tissue.
Habitat & Lifestyle
In all types of habitats, they attach and feed on gorgonians. The shell’s lustrous finish is produced by the fleshy mantle, which can cover the entire surface.
Distribution
Common Florida, Bahamas, Caribbean.
Unique Physique
Their manatle is cream-white covered with orangish, often somewhat rectangular spots with black outlines. They have a beautiful lustrous reddish cream to white shell.
Abundance
Common - Sighting as are frequent, but not necessarily on every dive.
